Opening Myself Up to Opportunity and Change
I decided to cut my hair a few days ago. I was talking to a friend earlier this week about the practice of cutting to open your body to new possibility. And then I decided what I was going to do for Lent. Namely, grow a more positive relationship with food through God. And then I started reading the book "Girl Get Your Money Straight" which one of the major take aways that I have thus far is being open to the possibility of life changing for the better and affirming that through word and deed.
If you read my post thus far this year you'll know I've been having a real personal struggle. I think it's partially what comes with trying to live an intentional life but at times I'm overwhelmed with how much lays before me. That sometimes derails me to a negatives space of no growth. While I don't think there is anything wrong with feeling angry. I do think its important that our anger, my anger, is an instigating rather than a forestalling force.
So Friday I decided that I was going to cut my hair. I've been unhappy with my hair for a while now. And rather than just sit and keep the unhappiness I decided to act. By acting in this way I'm committing not only to a new hair style but a mode of thinking that says I don't have to stay uncomfortable. I can open myself up to the possibility of happiness, to change, and to new opportunities. Now I'm not someone who believes that its always best to act without thought. What I'm trying to say is that I spent two months thinking about what makes me happy and unhappy about my hair. And once I was semi-clear on that I responded in a way that I thought would bring me more enjoyment of my hair.
By stepping out on faith (and any Black woman radically changing her hair doing so is because of all of the personal and communal emphasis that is put on our hair) that positivity would come from being open to change is what I'm working on this year. And this is just another facet.

ReplyDeleteYay! I'm loving how proactive you were. Soooo often we live with things we don't like and easy changes can make all the difference sometimes. Hope it makes you happy and if not, try a different cut :)
