Black Media: Puppets

As you know, I do media studies. Now I tend to study hip-hop media and stuff done by major label artists.

However I have a secret love: Puppets. Why I do I love puppets? I'm not sure. I've always really liked them. Especially the muppets. However, I've recently discovered indie puppeteers on youtube and I must say that I love it. I particularly love the 'adult' puppet shows/ worlds where the puppets deal with things like sex and violence. I think its the mixture of the supposedly 'innocent' world of puppets (often thought of as children's toys/entertainment) and what we think of as adult (or at least non-children) topics.

Now I like puppet shows in general. However, I kind of love Black puppets. There are rarely Black puppets in puppet universes. And even when puppets come in brownish hues their 'skin' isn't necessarily meant to have any racial/ethnic significance. So when people intentionally mark puppets as Black (within the African diaspora in some way) I kind of love it.
